Democratization of Art
From the perspective of a social groups' function, a museum is not only a social art institution, but also an important window of public cultural services. It is not only responsible for exhibitions, collections, researches, communications and other responsibilities, but also plays an important role in public education, aiming at popularizing art to the masses, and improving their aesthetic tastes. In order to better help this, my research explores the art education in museums and galleries in mainland China and taking the Guangdong Museum and Shanghai Museum as examples. The content includes five parts: the general situation of art education in mainland China, with background, motivation and purpose of this study elaborated on introduction. By collecting literature from a series of works and publications related to public education in museums, the definitions, concepts and related studies and researches are explained in literature review, coupled with importance of the study and followed research questions. The research methods reveal the ways conducted in this research, including case study, interview in terms of selected museums' measures, exhibitions, resources, cooperation and their own public education projects. The analysis clarified the similarities, differences and found out the existing problems of selected museums' public education, and put forward feasible suggestions to solve these problems. Conclusions and limitations are proposed at last. Overall, this research tends to compare the public education status of Guangdong Museum and Shanghai Museum to help promote the development of museums' public education and the popularization of art.
